1783 → 1797
A town that moved down to the sea
The old village was Gioiosa Guardia, on Mount Meliuso. After the 1783 earthquake its people moved to the coast, and in 1797 they brought the statue of Saint Nicholas with them: that is how Gioiosa Marea was born. Saint Nicholas is the patron saint, celebrated on 6 December.
